I think they provide more knowledge to humans than ever before but also provide an equal amount of distraction that takes away from actually living life.

I love my smartphone and I think it has made SOME things in life easier. But receiving emails on my phone every 15 minutes, has escalated my already out of control distractibility!

I'd say you should see if you can set your smartphone to retrieve your email when YOU want it, rather than have it "pushed" to you when it comes in. That's what I do, but I have an iPhone that lets you set it so you don't get your email unless you want it.

Sorry, I've been away from this group for a while. I agree about distraction. Also, about needing to live life. Has anyone seen that commercial about the young person with 600 friends on Facebook who thinks that her parents aren't living life. They are out doing things. Yet, I think that these devices can be very, very helpful as you live your life. A friend of mine just told me that on a trip to Hawaii she used her Yelp application on the iPhone to find restaurants near them, as they explored one of the islands. Before you'd have to find a yellow pages and then get directions. It's just so much easier now.

Smart phones? Evil but necessary in today's world. Too complicated for me but I have one. I'm just not sure who owns it. Do I? Or does Yahoo, Google, ATT, and everyone else that uses it in the background and tracks me everywhere I go and see everything I do with it? :)

I get a "kick" out of remembering the old wooden phone hanging on the wall back home. It was all you could do to just place a call and when you did, you always heard the neighbors breathing in the background. Now, there is a whole building full of computers inside a smart phone. You can order groceries, buy something online, everything. Pretty scary without that crank on the side.
